Can you microwave styrofoam?
Short answer, No. When heating up leftovers from restaurants and fast food joints, you may noticed that they use styrofoam as a to go box. Although it's a common to go box material, it isn't the best option to reheat your food in. That's because styrofoam is a petroleum based material that is made of benzene and styrene. When the styrofoam is exposed to high temperatures the toxic chemicals begin to break down and will seep into your food. These chemicals are carcinogenic and definitely not good for your health. Avoid using any styrofoam unless clearly marked as microwavable, and I would even recommend to avoid that. The safest way to heat up your left overs is to move it over into a plate and put a damp paper towel on it to prevent splattering. Don't reheat leftovers more than once.
